Chennai, July 18:
Veteran filmmaker Velu Prabhakaran, known for his path-breaking and unconventional contributions to Tamil cinema, passed away on Thursday following a prolonged illness. He was 68.
A bold and unflinching voice in the film industry, Prabhakaran was best known for his works such as Nalaya Manithan, Kadavul, Puratchikkaaran, and Kadhal Kadhai. His films often dealt with themes that many shied away from—atheism, caste inequality, gender politics, and sexuality. His fearless storytelling and audacious visual style earned him both admiration and criticism, placing him in a unique league of filmmakers unafraid to challenge societal norms.
Emerging in the late 1980s, Velu Prabhakaran carved a niche for himself with science fiction and horror elements in Tamil cinema at a time when such genres were still evolving. Over the decades, he evolved into a provocative voice, often questioning religious orthodoxy and societal taboos through his narratives.
His contributions extended beyond direction; he was also a cinematographer, writer, and actor. Known for his intense commitment to his craft, Prabhakaran inspired a generation of indie filmmakers to take risks and stay true to their creative instincts.
His mortal remains will be kept for public homage at his residence “White House”, 21st Street, Sri Krishna Nagar, Valasaravakkam, from Saturday evening until Sunday afternoon. The cremation is scheduled to take place on Sunday evening at the Porur crematorium, in the presence of family and close friends.
