As the sacred Tamil month of Aadi begins, popular Amman temples across Chennai have taken on a festive and spiritual aura, drawing thousands of devotees seeking divine blessings. Brightly lit gopurams, floral decorations, and devotional music have transformed these shrines into vibrant centres of worship and celebration.Special poojas, abhishekams, and homams are being held in prominent temples like Kaligambal Temple in Parry’s Corner, Vadivudai Amman Temple in Thiruvottiyur, Karumari Amman Temple in Thiruverkadu, and the historic Mundakanni Amman Temple in Mylapore. The month of Aadi is considered highly auspicious for worshipping the Divine Mother, and many women, in particular, offer prayers for family welfare, prosperity, and good health.
Priests say there has been a marked increase in footfall this year. “We are seeing a large number of devotees come early in the morning to participate in the Aadi poojas,” said a priest at an Amman Temple. “Aadi Fridays are especially important. We perform special archanas and distribute prasadam to all.”
At the Thiruverkadu Karumari Amman Temple, long queues of women devotees could be seen carrying turmeric, kumkum, and neem leaves as offerings. “I come every year during Aadi,” said Lakshmi, a homemaker from Ambattur. “Amman has protected our family through tough times. I feel peaceful and blessed when I visit her shrine.”
Many temples have also arranged Aadi Pooram celebrations, Thiruvilakku poojas, and spiritual discourses throughout the month. “The energy is divine. I brought my daughters here to pray for their well-being and marriage,” said Meenakshi, a resident of Triplicane, after attending the early morning pooja at Kaligambal Temple.
Vendors outside temple entrances are doing brisk business selling flowers, bangles, sarees, and pooja items, all considered part of the traditional Aadi offerings.
Despite the crowds, volunteers and temple staff are ensuring smooth darshan and distribution of prasadam. Sanitation and safety measures are also in place, especially at temples expecting larger gatherings on Fridays.
With the month of Aadi in full swing, the spiritual atmosphere in Chennai’s Amman temples reflects deep-rooted faith, community spirit, and devotion passed through generations.
