To mark the birthday of the late actor and political leader Captain Vijayakanth, his iconic 100th film Captain Prabhakaran is set to re-release across Tamil Nadu on August 22. The film has been digitally restored using modern 4K technology, promising fans a grand cinematic experience in over 500 theatres.Originally released on April 14, 1991, during Tamil New Year, Captain Prabhakaran was directed by R.K. Selvamani and went on to become a massive box-office hit. It was this film that earned Vijayakanth the beloved title “Captain” from the people, a name that stayed with him throughout his life.
The re-release is being organized by Sparrow Cinemas, under the leadership of Karthik Venkatesan. The official announcement was made on August 24 at the DMDK headquarters in Koyambedu. The press event saw the presence of notable personalities including director R.K. Selvamani, DMDK leader Premalatha Vijayakanth, party treasurer L.K. Sudheesh, and directors Vikraman, R.V. Udayakumar, Aravindraj, and Perarasu.
As a tribute to Captain Vijayakanthâs legacy, Sparrow Cinemas also hosted a special lunch for over 1,500 attendees during the event.
The film features music by maestro Ilaiyaraaja and boasts a powerful cast including Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar, Rupini, Ramya Krishnan, Mansoor Ali Khan, Livingston, and Gandhimathi.
Fans of Tamil cinema and Captain Vijayakanth are eagerly awaiting the re-release, which promises to bring back nostalgic memories while introducing the film to a new generation.
