The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is launching the city’s first electric vehicle (EV) charging station beneath the Mahalingapuram Road flyover at North Usman Road junction in T Nagar. Part of a ₹3.75 crore redevelopment project, the initiative includes charging points for two-wheelers in coordination with the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation.In addition to the EV facility, the space under the flyover will feature designated two-wheeler parking, five commercial kiosks, eight toilets (including accessible facilities), RO drinking water, landscaping, and tactile pathways for the visually impaired. Other enhancements include public seating, ornamental lighting, CCTV cameras, paved flooring, and improved signage.
A similar ₹3.75 crore project will be undertaken under the TTK Road–CP Ramaswamy Road flyover in Alwarpet. This site will offer parking for two- and four-wheelers, commercial stalls, landscaping, drainage upgrades, and security features — though it will not include EV charging stations.
These upgrades mark a major step in promoting EV adoption and improving the utility and safety of public urban spaces in Chennai.
