Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan has made a strong call for a fundamental shift in societal attitudes to eradicate honour killings in Tamil Nadu. Reacting to the recent shocking murder of a youth in Krishnagiri, reportedly linked to caste-based opposition to a relationship, Haasan emphasized that such brutal acts are deeply rooted in regressive social norms.
He stated that honour killings are not just criminal acts but reflect a dangerous mindset embedded in the current social structure. “We need a revolutionary change in how we perceive relationships, caste, and honour. Until then, these killings will continue under the guise of protecting family dignity,” Haasan said.
He urged political leaders, social organizations, and the public to collectively work towards breaking down caste-based prejudices and promoting human dignity and equality. Haasan has consistently spoken against caste discrimination and communal violence, and reiterated that modern Tamil society must uphold compassion over outdated customs.
