Leaders from the VCK, CPI, and CPI(M) met Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday urging the state government to bring in a special law to prevent honour killings in Tamil Nadu.

VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan said that the law should be framed as recommended by the Indian Law Commission. He also requested the formation of a special intelligence unit to monitor and prevent such crimes and demanded strict action against police personnel found involved in any honour killing incidents. CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan said that honour killings were a serious threat to social equality and needed urgent legal measures.

CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmugam also asked for a separate law, pointing out that existing legal provisions had failed to stop caste-based killings. He sought adequate compensation and jobs for victims’ families.

These demands come after the murder of Chennai-based IT engineer Kavin Selvaganesh in Tirunelveli, which is suspected to be an honour killing. The case has been transferred to the CB-CID and the accused, reportedly the brother of Kavin’s girlfriend, has been arrested. His parents, both serving as police sub-inspectors, have been suspended from duty.
