Madurai, Aug 8: The Central Government has informed the Madras High Court that 50% of the construction work for the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) hospital in Madurai has been completed. The update was shared during the hearing of a public interest case filed by Madurai resident KK Ramesh, who had requested faster progress on the project.The court was told that the first phase of construction is expected to be completed by January 2026. After that, the premises will be handed over to AIIMS authorities for further preparations and operations.
The AIIMS project in Thoppur, near Madurai, was approved in 2018. However, the construction faced multiple delays. In earlier stages, the Central Government had said the entire project would be completed in 45 months. Later, the timeline was revised to 5 years and 8 months, with a total budget of ₹1,977.8 crore.
With the construction now halfway through, the High Court expressed satisfaction with the update and did not issue any further orders. The case may be closed in the upcoming hearings.
