Adelaide, Aug 9: Australia have confirmed that Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head will be their first-choice T20I opening partnership as preparations begin for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Marsh, Australia’s T20I captain, revealed on Friday that he and the aggressive left-hander – currently ranked No.2 in the ICC T20I batting rankings—will spearhead the batting line-up in the shortest format over the next year.It’ll be myself and Heady [Travis Head] up the top for the foreseeable future,” Marsh told reporters ahead of the three-match T20I series against South Africa starting on Sunday, 10 August. “Obviously, we’ve played a lot together, (we’ve) got a great relationship, so (we’ll) start there.”
Although the pair have yet to open together in T20 internationals, they have already built a formidable understanding at the top of the order in one-day cricket – amassing 282 runs from just five innings at an average of 70.50. Across formats, Marsh and Head have put on 504 runs from 14 partnerships, including one century and three half-century stands.
Marsh’s T20I batting journey has come full circle. Initially stationed at No.3 during Australia’s victorious 2021 T20 World Cup campaign – where his match-winning knock in the final earned him the Player of the Final award – the 33-year-old has now embraced the challenge of opening. He occupied the role throughout the recent 5-0 whitewash of the West Indies, though his personal returns were modest with 81 runs from five matches.
