The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded consultancy contracts for the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for two significant metro line extensions, aiming to enhance connectivity across the city. The contracts for both projects have been given to M/s Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd, with the reports expected to be submitted within 120 days.The first extension is for Corridor 4, stretching approximately 7 km from Light House Metro to High Court Metro. This route is designed to improve access to key city landmarks, including Marina Beach and the Secretariat. By connecting these areas, CMRL hopes to better serve both daily commuters and tourists. The DPR for this extension is valued at ₹38,20,000.
The second proposed corridor is a new 21 km route from Tambaram to Velachery via Guindy. This extension will link suburban areas such as Tambaram, Medavakkam, and Pallikaranai to the existing Guindy Metro Station on Corridor 1. This project is a key part of CMRL’s plan to integrate various modes of transport and serve the growing mobility needs of Chennai’s suburban population. The DPR for this route is priced at ₹96,19,000.
The contract signing ceremony was led by CMRL Managing Director M.A. Siddique, IAS, alongside Project Director T. Archunan and Senior Vice President of Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd, Mr. Parveen Kumar. The DPRs will be crucial in evaluating route alignment, passenger projections, and technical feasibility, providing the groundwork for future decision-making and implementation of these new lines.
