In a major push towards sustainable urban mobility, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) Chennai has launched 55 state-of-the-art electric buses to serve key routes across the city. Designed to offer zero-emission, eco-friendly travel, these buses will connect major city hubs, reduce carbon footprint, and provide a more comfortable commuting experience for passengers.
The newly introduced fleet will operate on six important routes, catering to both intra-city and suburban passengers. Among the most prominent is the MAA2 route, which will run between Chennai Airport and Siruseri SIPCOT with 15 buses. This route will serve busy stops including Meenambakkam, Alandur, Guindy, Saidapet, Little Mount, Taramani, Thiruvanmiyur, Sholinganallur, Navalur, and Siruseri SIPCOT, providing a green alternative for airport and IT corridor commuters.
The 95X route will see 5 new electric buses connecting Broadway and Thiruvanmiyur, stopping at key points such as Parry’s, Central, Egmore, Anna Salai, Saidapet, Adyar, and Thiruvanmiyur. Similarly, the 555S route from Koyambedu to Chembarambakkam will operate 5 buses via CMBT, Maduravoyal, Poonamallee, and Saveetha Medical College.
For long-distance city connectivity, the 19 route will deploy 5 electric buses between Thiruvottiyur and Thiruporur, passing through Royapuram, Broadway, Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, Sholinganallur, Navalur, Kelambakkam, and Thiruporur. Another key addition is the 102 route from Broadway to Kelambakkam, also with 5 buses, serving important transit points along Anna Salai and the IT corridor.
Significantly, the 570/570S services will enhance suburban connectivity, with 20 electric buses operating between Neyveli and Koyambedu / Siruseri SIPCOT. The 570 route will connect Neyveli, Panruti, Vadalur, Chengalpattu, Tambaram, Perungalathur, Vandalur, Sholinganallur, and Siruseri SIPCOT, while the 570S will offer a direct link to SIPCOT for faster travel.
According to MTC officials, the initiative underscores the corporation’s commitment to providing sustainable, reliable, and commuter-friendly public transport. The electric buses are equipped with modern amenities, promise a smoother ride, and are expected to reduce both noise and air pollution in the city.
