Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address from the Red Fort often serves as a platform for major policy announcements, and this year was no exception. By promising “next-generation GST reforms” and a substantial tax cut on everyday items as a Diwali gift, the government has sent a clear signal of its commitment to easing the financial burden on citizens. The proposed plan to overhaul the existing four-tier GST structure (5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%) into a simpler two-slab system—likely 5% and 18%—with special rates for certain luxury and “sin” goods, represents a significant move. This rationalization is expected to simplify compliance for businesses and, most importantly, make essential goods more affordable for the common person, thereby boosting consumption.
From an economic perspective, this move is being hailed by experts as a timely and strategic decision. With a robust GST collection, the government has the fiscal space to implement such a rate rationalization without a severe impact on revenue. By shifting the vast majority of items from the 12% slab to the lower 5% bracket and a significant portion from the 28% to the 18% slab, the government aims to stimulate domestic demand. This is particularly beneficial for small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which are expected to see a boost in sales. The reforms also aim to address the inverted duty structure, a long-standing issue that has locked up working capital for many businesses and hindered the competitiveness of Indian exports.
Beyond the numbers, this announcement carries a powerful political message. It frames the government as responsive to the needs of the average citizen, directly connecting a major reform with a popular festive season. By promising to make daily-use goods cheaper, the administration is appealing to a broad demographic, from middle-class families to farmers and small businesses. While the full details will be revealed in the upcoming GST Council meetings, the promise itself sets a tone for the coming months, signaling a focus on pro-consumer policies and a commitment to refining a landmark tax system to align with the vision of a self-reliant India.
