Heavy rains lashed Chennai and its suburbs late last night and early this morning, flooding several roads and low-lying areas. The sudden showers brought much-needed relief from the recent heatwave.According to the Meteorological Department, some areas in North Chennai, including Manali and Wimco Nagar, recorded extremely heavy rainfall of over 25 cm in just a few hours. Officials said this was caused by a cloudburst, a weather event usually seen in hilly areas.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who is currently in Germany for an investment trip, called Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials to check on the situation. He instructed them to take preventive measures and ensure public safety.
GCC workers were deployed to drain water and ease traffic congestion. Officials confirmed that no major damages were reported, and life in most areas remained normal.
The Met office said light to moderate rains are likely to continue in many parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till September 6. A fresh low-pressure area is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal around September 2.
