The annual Vinayaka idol immersion in Tamil Nadu was completed peacefully on Sunday. In Chennai alone, over 1,500 idols of Lord Ganesha, installed in various parts of the city, were taken in colourful processions and immersed in the sea under tight police security.
Across the state, more than 3,000 idols were immersed in water bodies. Lakhs of devotees, including families with children, joined the celebrations with music, drums, and dancing.
Chennai Police had identified five immersion points along the Marina beach. Large cranes, trained divers, fishermen, swimmers, and NGOs assisted in the safe immersion of idols. Drones were used for surveillance. Public entry to the seashore was restricted for safety reasons.
The processions moved along routes cleared by the police, avoiding sensitive areas. Bursting of crackers was banned and fully followed. Volunteers offered free food, water, buttermilk, and juices to devotees, with members of the Islamic community also joining in to distribute refreshments, showcasing communal harmony.
The Marina beachfront and Bharati Salai were packed with thousands of onlookers. Police ensured lighting and other facilities as immersions continued late into the night. No untoward incidents were reported.
