Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has emphasized the importance of revealing the historical significance of Poompuhar, the ancient port city once known as Kaveripoompattinam. In a recent post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Stalin highlighted the state’s efforts to explore and showcase the rich maritime heritage of Tamil Nadu.Poompuhar, located in the Mayiladuthurai district, is renowned for its references in Sangam literature and ancient Tamil epics, underscoring its prominence as a major port city in early Tamil history. To delve deeper into its historical importance, the Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department, in collaboration with the Indian Maritime University, has commenced archaeological excavations in the region.
In his post, Stalin referenced the poetic lines from the ancient Tamil text “Pattinappalai,” which describe the flourishing trade and vibrant life of Poompuhar:
āLet us reveal the glory of Poompuhar, where the waves of the sea meet the shores, and the black stones of the land are adorned.ā
The Chief Minister’s initiative aims to bring to light the ancient Tamil civilization’s maritime prowess and its historical significance in global trade networks. By uncovering these ancient sites, the government seeks to promote Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural heritage and bolster tourism in the region.
