The Madras High Court has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Karur stampede. The incident happened on September 27 during a roadshow by actor-politician Vijay. Forty-one people died.
Justice N. Senthilkumar gave the order while hearing a petition seeking action and rules for political events. The judge said he was saddened by the tragedy and blamed the state for not fixing responsibility. He also criticised Vijay, saying the leader “vanished” after the incident and called it poor leadership.
The court pulled up Vijay’s party, TVK, for breaking event rules. It asked why police had not filed criminal cases earlier for lapses during the rally.
The SIT will be led by IGP Asra Garg and will start work at once.

The state told the court that an FIR has been filed against five people, including TVK leaders Bussy Anand and CTR Nirmal Kumar. Two have been arrested. Officials said the government is not shielding anyone and the probe will go ahead.
