The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to introduce dedicated kids’ play areas and adult fitness zones at the popular Marina Beach, enhancing its appeal beyond the usual sand and surf. The proposed children’s park will feature skating rinks, wall climbing activities, swings, slides, merry-go-rounds, and see-saw rides, along with decorative panels and flower-shaped elements on a soft artificial turf. The aim is to encourage physical activity, coordination, and imaginative play while ensuring safety and durability.
For adults, a fitness hub equipped with gym equipment, including hydraulic machines, will be established to promote routine exercise. According to GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran, the kids’ play area will cost approximately Rs 64 lakh, while the adult fitness facilities are expected to cost around Rs 1 crore.
The 50-acre Marina Beach, which earned Blue Flag certification after restoration in 2025, will see these facilities to divert crowds, curb illegal stalls, and provide better recreational options. Indoor gaming facilities, including badminton courts, will also be introduced.
A detailed project report (DPR) is currently being prepared, and work orders are expected to be issued soon, marking a new chapter in enhancing Marina Beach as a safe and vibrant public space.
