Kathmandu, Oct 10: Nepal Police on Thursday arrested 18 activists affiliated with the youth-led Gen Z movement, including Dr. Nicholous Bhusal, while they protested at Maitighar demanding the arrest of former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and ex-Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. The demonstrators accused the caretaker government of failing to act on their demands, even as tensions from earlier protests remain high. Thousands of youths had earlier taken to the streets in September, claiming widespread government corruption and opposing a ban on social media platforms.
Earlier clashes had turned deadly, with reports indicating 19 protesters were killed in confrontations with security forces. The political fallout led to the resignation of PM Oli and the appointment of Sushila Karki as interim prime minister.
Analysts say the continued youth unrest underscores deeper dissatisfaction with Nepal’s political class and signals ongoing instability ahead of the next general election.
