Kathmandu, Oct 11: Former Nepal Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak on Friday denied allegations that he or former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli ordered the use of excessive force against youths during the Gen Z protests in Kathmandu on September 8–9.The protests, which saw thousands rallying against the government, resulted in 76 deaths, including 19 protesters killed during police firing on the first day.
Lekhak dismissed claims of ordering the crackdown as “rumours” and “not true.” In response to the violence, the interim government led by Sushila Karki has established a three-member judicial probe commission to investigate the alleged misuse of force.
Lekhak urged the commission to carry out its work impartially and within legal boundaries.
He also emphasized the importance of unity and dialogue among stakeholders to address the concerns and demands raised by the protesting Gen Z youth.
