With just a week left until Diwali, Chennai’s textile markets are experiencing a surge in shoppers eager to purchase festive attire. On Sunday, the city’s shopping hubs, particularly T. Nagar, witnessed a significant influx of customers from early morning. Typically, these areas see increased footfall around noon, but this year, the crowd began gathering as early as 10 a.m.

Shoppers were seen browsing a wide array of garments, including sarees, salwars, shirts, jeans, and children’s clothing, with many stores offering new models to attract customers. Despite intermittent rainfall, people continued to shop, seeking shelter during showers and resuming their purchases once the weather cleared.

The bustling markets led to traffic congestion in areas like Ranganathan Street, Usman Road, and Pondy Bazaar, with police deploying personnel to manage the crowds and ensure safety. Additionally, shoppers from neighboring districts such as Thiruvottiyur, Royapuram, Perambur, and Ambattur flocked to Vannarapettai, known for its extensive textile outlets. The festive shopping season is expected to continue gaining momentum as Diwali approaches.
