After a 17-year delay, the 5 km Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) extension from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount in Chennai is set to become operational from December 2025. Originally launched by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in 2008 with an estimated cost of Rs 498 crore, the project revived in 2020 saw costs rise to Rs 730 crore. The work on the railway track lining is complete, and rail distressingâa process that releases built-up stress in long welded railsâis underway. Machine packing and load deflection tests are also being conducted, while overhead electrification is expected to finish by November.The extension includes two new stations at Ullagaram and Adambakkam and is expected to benefit thousands of commuters from Pallikaranai, Madipakkam, and nearby areas by improving connectivity and reducing travel times.
