Continuous rainfall under the influence of the Northeast Monsoon has led to a steady rise in the Vaigai Dam’s water level in Theni district, prompting authorities to issue a third-stage flood alert. As of Tuesday noon, the water level reached 69.13 feet, just below the dam’s full capacity of 71 feet.The dam currently holds 5,605 mcft of water, with an inflow of 4,875 cusecs and an outflow of 3,630 cusecs, including releases for irrigation and drinking water supply.
The heavy inflows are being fed by continuous rain across the Varusanadu, Kottakudi, and hill catchment areas over the past week.
The Water Resources Department is releasing excess water in a controlled manner to prevent flooding downstream. Officials confirmed that all tributaries feeding the Vaigai—such as the Moola Vaigai, Manjalar, and Kattaru—are running at full capacity due to persistent monsoon rains.
Flood alerts have been issued for residents along the Vaigai River in five southern districts: Theni, Madurai, Dindigul, Sivagangai, and Ramanathapuram. Local administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert and coordinate evacuation plans where needed.
While farmers have expressed relief as the full reservoir promises strong irrigation support for samba cultivation, authorities remain vigilant to manage water levels and ensure safety across downstream regions.
