Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin took to X today questioning whether Madurai needs “development politics or… politics?” in response to the ongoing Thiruparankundram Karthigai Deepam controversy.
He stated people will decide, emphasizing Metro Rail, AIIMS, new factories, and jobs as what Madurai residents truly seek for growth.
The post comes after two days of protests over denied lamp lighting at the hilltop Deepathoon despite Madras High Court Madurai Bench orders.
The court directed temple authorities to allow the ritual at the hill peak, dismissing TN government’s appeals and warning of contempt for non-compliance, but lamps were lit lower down citing security. Stalin’s government appealed to Supreme Court, fueling BJP-led protests with over 500 detentions including Nainar Nagendran.
Allies praised Stalin for maintaining peace, while opposition accused vote-bank tactics. The row at Lord Muruga’s first Padai Veedu temple highlights tensions between religious rights and administration, with court slamming the state’s “ulterior motive”.
Stalin positioned DMK’s focus on infrastructure against rivals’ alleged communal stir.
Social media erupted with divided reactions, as devotees decried the hilltop denial as faith suppression while supporters hailed Stalin’s development pitch.
