Tirupur, Dec 7: The Hindu Munnani has called for protests across Tamil Nadu on December 7, in response to the state government’s refusal to allow the lighting of the “deepathoon” (stone lamp-pillar) at the shrine atop Thirupparankundram hill, even though court orders had reportedly permitted the ritual.
Speaking to the media in Tirupur, the organisation’s state president Kadeswara Subramaniam accused the government of disrespecting the religious sentiments of devotees. He claimed that the state authorities were acting in bad faith despite the court’s direction to allow the lamp-lighting.
Subramaniam also pulled up the government for what he described as a “double standard,” alleging that since assuming power the ruling party (DMK) has demolished 178 temples across Tamil Nadu. He said the protest was aimed at condemning such actions and defending the rights of devotees.
The protest notice comes in the backdrop of recent tensions at Thirupparankundram: after police denied permission for the lamp-lighting ritual, citing security concerns, attempts by members of Hindu outfits to proceed led to clashes and subsequent enforcement of prohibitory orders under Section 144 (CrPC).
By announcing a statewide agitation, Hindu Munnani seeks to rally support across the state and press the government to reverse its decision. The protest is scheduled for December 7 and is expected to take place in multiple districts.
