Rajinikanth announced a sequel to his 1999 blockbuster Padayappa, tentatively titled Neelambari: Padayappa 2, inspired by the massive fan reception to Ramya Krishnan’s iconic villainess character from K.S. Ravikumar’s directorial.
The update came in a video shared by Soundarya Rajinikanth ahead of the original film’s re-release on December 12—Rajinikanth’s 75th birthday and marking 25 years since its release as Tamil cinema’s then-highest grosser, featuring Sivaji Ganesan, Soundarya, Nassar, and A.R. Rahman’s chart-topping soundtrack.
Rajinikanth reminisced about unprecedented craze, like women breaking gates for screenings, and noted the sequel trend with 2.0 and Jailer 2 prompting, “Why not Padayappa 2?”
He revealed story discussions are underway, promising a fan feast if plans align, building excitement for Neelambari’s return in this celebratory re-release timed for his milestone year.
