Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that rules and regulations should make life easier for people and not trouble them, as the country continues to face large-scale flight disruptions caused by the ongoing IndiGo crisis.
Speaking at the NDA parliamentary meeting, the Prime Minister noted that frequent complaints from passengers about cancellations, delays and poor communication highlight the need for policies that are practical and people-centric. He reminded ministers that the government’s priority must always be the welfare and convenience of citizens.
IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has cancelled and delayed hundreds of flights over the past several days. The crisis began after the enforcement of stricter DGCA rules related to pilot duty hours, which contributed to a shortage of crew. The government later suspended two of these rules temporarily to help stabilise operations. Despite this, many passengers across major cities continue to face difficulties.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also spoke about the situation, stating that the government will not allow rules to become a burden on ordinary people. He added that necessary steps will be taken to ensure airlines follow fair practices and that the aviation system remains smooth.
Meanwhile, the civil aviation ministry has launched a detailed inquiry into IndiGo’s staffing, planning and crisis management. Parliament’s standing committee on transport is also expected to question all major airlines and the DGCA about the ongoing disruptions.
