CMWSSB revises tanker water rates after six years

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has announced a revision in the price charged for drinking water delivered via tanker lorries — the first such increase in six years.
According to the update, the rate change affects all households and establishments that depend on tanker-supplied water, as the board adjusts prices to reflect rising costs and logistical expenses.
The board said the revised rates will come into effect immediately, and consumers are being informed to expect the updated charges the next time they request tanker-based water supply.
Officials noted that the decision was taken after considering cost increases in fuel, labour, and maintenance — pointing out that a rate revision was overdue given economic pressures over the past years.
The move has drawn attention across Chennai, especially among residents in areas without direct pipe-water connections. Many are expected to feel the impact during peak summer months when tanker water demand is high.
