In a surprising turn of events, K K Selvam — nephew of K. A. Sengottaiyan, a top leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) — formally joined All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Tuesday. The induction took place in the presence of AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
Selvam was previously part of the environment wing of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the Erode North District before his brief association with TVK. His father, K. A. Kaliappan, is Sengottaiyan’s elder brother, making Selvam a close member of the family.
This development comes just weeks after Sengottaiyan, a long-time AIADMK stalwart and nine-time MLA, left AIADMK and joined TVK — a major political shift in Tamil Nadu’s lead-up to the 2026 Assembly elections.
Political analysts suggest this move could be an attempt by AIADMK to retain influence in areas affected by Sengottaiyan’s departure, especially by roping in his relatives and supporters. It may also signal early signs of internal realignments and jockeying for ground-level influence ahead of the next electoral cycle.
