Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has announced that an additional 600 electric buses will soon be introduced in Chennai to expand the city’s eco-friendly public transport network. The decision was made during the third meeting of the Tamil Nadu Governing Council on Climate Change held at the Chennai Secretariat.Stalin said that with the rapid growth of traffic congestion in metropolitan areas such as Chennai, increasing the use of public transport is essential. To encourage more commuters to shift from private vehicles to public transport, the state government had earlier rolled out 120 electric buses under the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), which have received a positive response from the public. Based on this success, the government will soon commission another 600 electric buses for city routes.
The expansion of the electric bus fleet is part of the state’s broader climate action strategy to reduce vehicular emissions, cut pollution and ease congestion in urban centres. Stalin emphasised that promoting public transport not only addresses environmental challenges but also improves commuter convenience and overall quality of life.
The move aligns with ongoing efforts to modernise Chennai’s public transportation system, including earlier plans to introduce more electric buses across the city under sustainable mobility initiatives supported by national and international partners.
This initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to greener mobility solutions as Chennai continues to grow as a major metropolitan hub.
