Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday highlighted the severe economic impact of the United States’ “anti-India” tariff policy on several Indian industries, focusing on the carpet trade in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking from Germany, he shared a video of his interaction with Bhadohi’s carpet weavers during a “Jan Sansad” session at the Parliament House complex, emphasizing the hardships faced by these artisans.
Gandhi noted that Bhadohi, once celebrated as the “Carpet City” for its centuries-old craft, is now facing economic distress, with declining exports and businesses shifting to countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal.
Gandhi criticized the Indian government for failing to take concrete steps to support or revive these industries, either through foreign policy interventions or a structured national plan.
He underscored that the neglect has not only endangered the livelihoods of millions of weavers but has also affected their access to affordable and quality healthcare.
The crisis, he argued, reflects a broader failure to protect small industries and traditional crafts that are vital for employment, economic growth, and preserving India’s cultural heritage.
He stressed that small businesses and artisanal industries are essential for creating jobs, sustaining the economy, and contributing to India’s identity and global stature.
Gandhi urged the government to return economic power to these artisans through targeted policies, financial support, and incentives, enabling them to regain their lost livelihoods and strengthen India’s economy.
Gandhi also noted the political relevance of the issue, pointing out that Bhadohi is near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency of Varanasi.
He accused the government of turning a blind eye to the suffering of these communities despite their significant contribution to India’s economy and cultural heritage.
Concluding, Gandhi emphasized that protecting and empowering traditional industries and small businesses is crucial not only for sustaining livelihoods but also for ensuring India’s long-term economic and cultural growth.
Through robust policy intervention, these artisans can revive their craft, reclaim economic stability, and continue to drive India’s progress on the global stage.
