Arakkonam, Dec 25: Southern Railway has started major yard remodelling works at Arakkonam to improve train movement and reduce delays. The project is expected to help Vande Bharat and other express trains run faster and more smoothly towards Katpadi.
As part of the project, third and fourth railway lines will be laid between Puliyamangalam and Arakkonam. The work also includes straightening railway tracks and extending a 100-year-old subway near Arakkonam station. The total project cost is ₹97 crore.
Currently, trains from Chennai Central towards Arakkonam, Tiruttani and Katpadi often face delays because only two railway lines are available. With the addition of two new lines, trains will no longer have to wait for tracks, reducing congestion and improving punctuality.
The project will benefit long-distance trains going to Bengaluru, Kerala, Tirupati and Mumbai, as well as suburban trains used by daily passengers. Railway officials say the work will greatly improve efficiency and make travel faster and more comfortable for passengers.
