The recent sickle attack on a migrant worker by four minors near Tiruttani highlights deep psychological and social concerns behind such violence. The fact that the assault was not only carried out brutally but recorded and shared on social media shows a worrying trend where some youths seek attention or approval through violent acts. Instead of seeing the harm they cause, they may view violence as a way to show power or gain recognition online.

Psychologically, teenagers are still developing skills like empathy, self-control, and moral judgment. Their brains, especially the prefrontal cortex responsible for decision-making, are not fully matured. Factors like exposure to violent content, substance use, and weak social guidance can make them less sensitive to others’ pain and more likely to act impulsively without understanding the consequences.
This incident underlines the need for better guidance, emotional support, and values education for young people. Schools, families, and communities must work together to teach emotional control, ethical behavior, and responsible use of social media.

Without such measures, peer pressure, drugs, and online validation may continue to encourage dangerous behavior among minors, leading to more violent incidents in the future.
