The Madras High Court’s ruling allowing the Karthigai Deepam to be lit atop Thiruparankundram hill offers a balanced resolution to a sensitive dispute that had stirred cultural and political debates. By upholding the earlier order, the court has recognised the religious and cultural significance of the ritual while ensuring that proper oversight and law-and-order considerations are observed. This middle path respects tradition without compromising public safety or legal norms.
The controversy arose from conflicting claims over the hilltop pillar, but the court’s careful examination reaffirmed that the Deepathoon has been historically used for the ritual, in accordance with customary practices. At the same time, the verdict signals that disputes over religious observances must be settled through legal channels rather than political or communal pressures, protecting both faith and social harmony.
Going forward, this decision underscores the importance of cooperation between civil authorities and religious institutions.
By following judicial directions and maintaining order, authorities can allow centuries-old traditions to continue while safeguarding the interests of all communities. The ruling sets an example of how courts can mediate sensitive cultural issues, promoting a practical and respectful middle path.
