U.S. President Donald Trump has given the green light to a bipartisan Russia sanctions bill that could impose tough penalties on countries that continue to buy Russian oil, according to Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
The legislation, long in the making with support from both Republicans and Democrats, aims to increase pressure on Moscow amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict by targeting nations whose energy purchases help sustain Russia’s economy. Under the proposed framework, countries such as India, China and Brazil could face higher tariffs or sanctions if they persist in importing Russian crude and petroleum products.
Graham said Trump’s approval means the bill could be put to a congressional vote as early as next week, with expectations of strong bipartisan backing. While the measure must still clear both the Senate and the House before becoming law, it signals a more assertive U.S. stance on global energy trade and sanctions enforcement tied to the Ukraine war.
