The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is set to introduce 20 air-conditioned electric double-decker buses as part of its ongoing efforts to modernise the city’s public transport system.
The buses will be procured and operated under a gross cost contract model, where a contractor owns and maintains the vehicles while MTC pays on a per-kilometre basis and retains fare revenue.
Under this model, MTC will set routes and fares, while private operators handle the buses’ operation and maintenance.
This initiative aligns with earlier plans to revive double-decker services in an eco-friendly format, combining sustainability with enhanced commuter comfort.
The upcoming electric double-deckers are part of broader efforts to expand electric public transport in Chennai, echoing similar moves to introduce more electric buses across the city under clean air and green mobility programmes.
