Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai has urged party leaders and members to avoid commenting publicly on the ongoing alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as negotiations and seat-sharing talks continue ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. In a statement issued on Friday, Selvaperunthagai described the DMK–Congress partnership as “institutional and structural,” and emphasised that Congress leaders should refrain from expressing opinions or engaging in speculation about the alliance in public forums. He said that such discussions could create confusion or misinterpretation at a sensitive time and could be exploited by political opponents.
The TNCC head highlighted the importance of unity within the INDIA bloc, which consists of the DMK, Congress, and other allied parties, and said that recent election victories in the state — including strong performances in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha polls — were a result of this broad coalition. He also underscored the Congress party’s responsibility to counter attempts by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its affiliates to expand their influence in Tamil Nadu.
His advisory comes amid ongoing seat-sharing negotiations between the Congress and DMK leadership. Selvaperunthagai has repeatedly stressed that the alliance remains intact and that final decisions on seat allocations and power-sharing will be taken through formal discussions between both parties’ high commands.
The move to curb public comment on alliance matters appears designed to minimise internal discord and speculation, particularly in the lead-up to finalising the electoral strategy for the crucial state polls later this year.
