Due to the heavy travel rush ahead of the Pongal festival, traffic congestion is expected on GST Road and other major arterial roads in Chengalpattu district, with a large number of commuters heading to their native places. In view of this, the Chengalpattu District Police have announced temporary traffic restrictions to ensure public safety and maintain smooth vehicular movement.
As part of the measures, heavy commercial vehicles, including quarry lorries, ready-mix concrete (RMC) trucks and other heavy goods vehicles, will not be allowed to ply on designated stretches during specified hours. The restrictions will be in force on January 13 and 14 from 2 pm to 2 am, and again from 2 pm on January 18 till 12 noon on January 19.
During the restriction period, heavy vehicles have been advised to take the Walajabad–Oragadam–Sriperumbudur route as an alternate corridor to avoid entering congested areas. The police have put up signboards and deployed personnel at key junctions to guide motorists and enforce the diversion.
In addition, quarry operations will be temporarily suspended, and the movement of crusher lorries will be strictly regulated to reduce traffic load and prevent accidents. The district police have appealed to vehicle operators and the general public to cooperate with the arrangements, stating that the measures are aimed at ensuring a safe and hassle-free travel experience during the festive season.
