Washington, Jan 13: U.S. President Donald Trump announced a sweeping trade measure on Monday, imposing a 25 per cent tariff on any country that does business with Iran, effective immediately.
The move, posted on his social media platform Truth Social, aims to increase economic pressure on Tehran amid a violent crackdown on widespread protests in the Islamic Republic.
Under the announcement, nations that maintain trade ties with Iran — including major economies such as China, India, Turkey and the UAE — could face higher costs on goods entering the United States. Trump described the order as “final and conclusive,” though officials have yet to publish detailed legal documentation.
The tariff escalation comes at a time of heightened tensions over human rights in Iran, with rights groups reporting hundreds of protest-related deaths. The U.S. has also hinted at possible diplomatic or other actions in response to the unrest.
