The Chennai City Police have intensified security arrangements across the city ahead of Kaanum Pongal, the concluding day of the four-day Pongal festival, with massive crowds expected to turn out for outings and celebrations.
More than 16,000 police personnel along with 1,500 Home Guards have been deployed to ensure public safety and maintain law and order throughout the city.
Special attention is being given to high-footfall locations such as Marina Beach, which traditionally draws lakhs of visitors on Kaanum Pongal. Police deployment has been strengthened along Kamarajar Salai and near prominent memorials, including those of MGR, Jayalalithaa, C N Annadurai and M Karunanidhi. Mounted police, all-terrain vehicles, and foot patrols will be in place at Marina and Besant Nagar’s Elliot’s Beach, while barricades have been erected to regulate crowd movement and prevent overcrowding.
As part of safety measures, sea bathing has been strictly prohibited on the festive day to avert accidents. Warning boards have been installed along the coastline, and police personnel will closely monitor compliance.
The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services will deploy over 50 trained firemen equipped with life-saving gear, while local fishermen and expert swimmers will assist as additional lifeguards along the shore. Traffic arrangements have also been put in place to handle the expected surge in vehicles.
Several roads near beaches and major public spots will see temporary diversions and restrictions, and parking will be allowed only in designated areas. Police have advised the public to use public transport wherever possible and to follow traffic advisories to avoid congestion.
In addition, special surveillance teams and control rooms will function round the clock to monitor crowd movement and respond swiftly to emergencies. CCTV cameras and drone surveillance will be used in sensitive locations to ensure real-time monitoring.
Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant, safeguard children and valuables, and cooperate with authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable Kaanum Pongal celebration for all.
According to GCC officials, parking facilities have been temporarily arranged at the playground located behind Anna Memorial Park. The designated area can accommodate:
50 cars,  50 vans, 50 tourist buses
Additionally, two-wheelers will be allowed to park along the Marina service road, officials said.
The GCC has urged the public to cooperate to ensure smooth traffic flow and a safe holiday experience at Marina Beach.
