Exit polls have projected a strong performance for the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in the Maharashtra civic body elections, including the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls. The predictions indicate significant seat gains for the ruling alliance across major urban local bodies.Voting was held yesterday in 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nagpur and Nashik, after a prolonged gap since the last civic elections in 2017. Polling took place amid tight security, with several crores of voters exercising their franchise to decide the fate of thousands of candidates.
The BMC election, in particular, has drawn statewide attention as India’s richest civic body returned to polls after years of administrative rule. Counting of votes is scheduled for January 16, which will confirm whether the exit poll projections translate into electoral victory.
The results are expected to have a major impact on Maharashtra’s urban political landscape and future alliance equations.
