The Madras High Court on Tuesday reserved its orders on the contentious appeal concerning the release of Jana Nayagan, the highly anticipated film starring Thalapathy Vijay, leaving its theatrical debut shrouded in uncertainty. The appeal was filed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) challenging a single judge’s directive that had ordered the board to issue a censor certificate for the movie. During Tuesday’s hearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice M.M. Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan, the CBFC argued that the matter was still under review and that the final certification decision rests with the board’s chairperson, not just with the examining committee. According to the CBFC’s submission, although the examining committee had watched the film and suggested cuts to 14 scenes before re-evaluation, the process was in flux and incomplete. The CBFC also noted procedural aspects, including timelines for constituting a revising committee and the board’s authority in final certification decisions. The producers, represented by senior counsel Satish Parasaran, argued that the delay in certification was unjustified and that the film’s scheduled January 9 Pongal release was jeopardised by procedural lapses and later complaints against the film’s content. They highlighted that once an examining committee views a film, it should promptly record recommendations, and that extended delays violated certification norms. During arguments, the judges noted that completing all judicial procedures in a single day to match a release schedule was impractical, and questioned whether it was appropriate to announce a release date before the censor certificate was fully secured. With the bench reserving its order without specifying a date for the verdict, the fate of Jana Nayagan’s release remains uncertain. Observers note that the film’s certification process has already led to the postponement of its Pongal theatrical debut and has impacted advance bookings in key cities. Jana Nayagan — directed by H. Vinoth and featuring an ensemble cast — has generated considerable anticipation as Vijay’s final film before entering politics, but its screening hinge on the court’s upcoming decision on the CBFC appeal.
