From Saturday, January 24, government buses will no longer operate from the Broadway Bus Station as part of planned redevelopment and infrastructure work, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has announced. Commuters have been advised to take note of the changes as services are shifted to temporary locations to ensure continuity of city bus operations.According to the transport authority, services that previously originated or terminated at Broadway will now operate from temporary bus termini at Royapuram and Island Grounds until further notice. The move comes in preparation for major construction and improvement works at the Broadway facility, which forms part of a broader urban infrastructure upgrade.
Under the revised arrangement:
Buses that normally depart from Broadway will be rerouted from Royapuram, serving routes through Anna Salai and EVR Periyar Salai, among other key corridors.
In addition, a set of other services will operate from the Island Grounds temporary terminal, ensuring wider coverage while the Broadway terminus remains closed.
MTC officials said that the temporary arrangements have been put in place to maintain uninterrupted bus services for daily commuters, even as infrastructure works are undertaken at the historic Broadway hub. The authority has urged passengers to plan their travel in advance and check specific bus route departures and boarding points from the new temporary locations.
The suspension of services from Broadway is tied to the redevelopment of the bus terminus and the creation of a modern multimodal transport facility at the site — part of efforts to improve urban mobility and commuter experience in the city.
While the exact timeline for the reopening of the Broadway Bus Station has not been disclosed, the MTC reiterated that the temporary shift is aimed at enabling renovation works while continuing essential public transport operations with minimal disruption.
