Cong should team up with TVK to return to glory, says SAC

Tiruchy, Jan 29: Veteran filmmaker and politician SA Chandrasekhar on Wednesday suggested that the Indian National Congress should consider forming an electoral alliance with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by his son actor-turned-politician Vijay, to help the party regain its political relevance in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters in Tiruvarur, Chandrasekhar argued that the Congress has seen its stature decline over the years, partly because it has repeatedly supported other parties rather than contesting directly for power. He said aligning with TVK — which he described as a rising force in state politics — could give the Congress an opportunity to reconnect with voters and revive its historical legacy.

Chandrasekhar noted that TVK has promised power-sharing and presented itself as a fresh alternative to the long-dominant Dravidian parties in the state. With Dravidian parties having ruled Tamil Nadu for over six decades, he said newcomers like TVK were making significant inroads and appealing especially to the youth.

He also defended his son’s political ambitions, saying Vijay — who entered politics two years ago — was not swayed by pressures connected to his film career and remained focused on his political path.

Chandrasekhar’s remarks add to ongoing speculation about shifting alliances as major parties prepare for the state elections, although the Congress leadership has previously reaffirmed its existing alliance with the DMK in Tamil Nadu.
