Sydney / Canberra, Jan 30: All-rounder Sophie Molineux has been named the new all-format captain of the Australian women’s cricket team, taking over from Alyssa Healy ahead of a major home series against India beginning in mid-February. The announcement coincides with Cricket Australia’s unveiling of the squads for the multi-format tour.
The 28-year-old Victorian — a left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder — will lead Australia in the upcoming three-match T20I series against India, starting February 15 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Healy, who is set to retire from international cricket after the series, will captain the ODI and one-off Test fixtures before Molineux assumes full leadership across formats on subsequent tours.
Selectors have also named Tahlia McGrath and Ashleigh Gardner as vice-captains to support Molineux in her new role. The touring squads include a blend of experienced stars such as Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry and up-and-coming talents including Lucy Hamilton, who is in line for her Test debut.
In addition to the T20I team, Cricket Australia released the ODI and Test squads, maintaining continuity while giving Molineux opportunities to lead different formats. Notable changes include the return of Nicola Carey to the white-ball line-ups and the absence of Alana King from the T20I squad, while seasoned seamer Megan Schutt is missing from the ODI side.
Molineux’s appointment marks a significant leadership transition for one of the world’s most successful women’s teams. She has excelled both at international level and in domestic competitions, and her elevation reflects the confidence of selectors in her leadership and cricketing acumen as Australia prepares for key challenges, including the forthcoming T20 World Cup later this year.
