Melbourne, Feb 1: Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan delivered a performance of grit, power, and composure to defeat world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, clinching the 2026 Australian Open women’s singles title at Rod Laver Arena on Saturday. In a high-quality and fiercely contested final, Rybakina prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, sealing her first Australian Open crown and second Grand Slam title in front of a packed Melbourne Park.
The final lived up to its billing as a clash between two of the most dominant hitters on the women’s tour. Rybakina struck the early blow, breaking Sabalenka’s serve in the opening set and maintaining her advantage with precise serving and clean baseline hitting. Despite intense rallies and mounting pressure, the Kazakh player held her nerve to take the first set 6-4.
Sabalenka, bidding for another Melbourne title, responded strongly in the second set. The Belarusian raised her intensity, cutting down unforced errors and attacking Rybakina’s second serve to wrest control. Her aggressive approach paid off as she levelled the contest by claiming the second set 6-4, pushing the final into a decisive third set.
The decider appeared to tilt Sabalenka’s way early on when she surged to a 3-0 lead, drawing loud support from the crowd. However, Rybakina showed remarkable resilience, refusing to panic and gradually finding her rhythm. She broke back with a series of deep returns and powerful forehands, swinging the momentum decisively in her favour.
From there, Rybakina dominated the closing stages, winning five of the last six games to complete a memorable comeback and seal the championship. Her ability to absorb pressure and strike decisively at key moments proved decisive against the world No. 1.
The triumph carried added significance as it avenged Rybakina’s defeat to Sabalenka in the 2023 Australian Open final, underscoring her growth as a Grand Slam contender. The title also marked a major milestone following a challenging phase in her career marked by injury setbacks and coaching changes.
With this victory, Rybakina further cemented her status among the elite of women’s tennis, adding the Australian Open trophy to her 2022 Wimbledon title. For Sabalenka, the loss ended her bid for another Melbourne crown, though her consistency throughout the tournament reaffirmed her position at the top of the rankings.
Rybakina’s triumph at Melbourne Park is expected to have a significant impact on the 2026 season, as she emerges as one of the leading forces in women’s tennis.
