Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Monday inaugurated the long-awaited ‘L’ shaped flyover at Madhya Kailash Temple junction on Sardar Patel Road, a crucial arterial stretch linking Adyar and Guindy.
Constructed at a cost of ₹61 crore, the 652-metre-long flyover has been developed to decongest the busy 3.2-km corridor that connects key institutions such as IIT Madras, Anna University and the Cancer Institute (WIA). The stretch witnesses heavy vehicular movement throughout the day, particularly during peak hours.
The flyover has been designed exclusively for vehicles travelling from Sardar Patel Road towards Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). It is expected to facilitate seamless movement for commuters on the Adyar–Guindy, Guindy–Adyar and OMR–Guindy routes by eliminating delays caused by traffic signals and junction-level congestion.
Officials said the structure incorporates enhanced safety measures. Built using the ‘superelevation’ technique to ensure stability on curves, the flyover features elevated retaining walls, improved illumination and prominent warning signage. A speed limit of 30 kmph has been enforced along the curved portion to prevent accidents.
After formally inaugurating the facility, the Chief Minister walked along the flyover to review the quality of construction and interact with officials. The new infrastructure is expected to significantly cut travel time and provide relief to thousands of daily commuters using the busy corridor.
