The city is set to witness the return of its iconic double-decker buses — this time in a modern, eco-friendly format. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has announced plans to introduce electric double-decker buses as part of its public transport modernisation drive.
According to official sources, the MTC will procure 20 electric double-deckers in the first phase, including 16 air-conditioned variants and four open-roof models. The buses will be operated under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, which covers vehicle maintenance and charging infrastructure support.
The open-roof electric double-deckers are expected to offer a unique travel experience, particularly for tourists and leisure commuters. With panoramic views of the city skyline, quieter engines and zero tailpipe emissions, the buses aim to combine nostalgia with sustainability. Double-decker buses were once a familiar sight on Chennai’s roads before being phased out several decades ago.
Transport officials said the move aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader push toward green mobility. The initiative is intended to reduce carbon emissions, promote clean energy transport, modernise the city’s bus fleet and enhance passenger comfort.
If the initial rollout proves successful, the MTC is considering expanding the fleet by up to 25 per cent within a year. The reintroduction of double-deckers is expected to add both capacity and character to Chennai’s evolving public transport network.
