Eleven fishermen from Tamil Nadu returned to Chennai after being released from Sri Lankan custody. They arrived by flight from Colombo and were received by state officials before being sent to their respective hometowns. The fishermen had been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line while fishing. Their boats were seized and they were produced before a Sri Lankan court, which later ordered their release.
Following diplomatic efforts and coordination between Indian and Sri Lankan authorities, the fishermen were freed and allowed to return home. Their return has brought relief to their families, who had been awaiting their release for several months.
The incident once again highlights the recurring issue of arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen in Sri Lankan waters.
