A recent road trip from Chennai to Tirupati has once again brought attention to the ongoing challenges faced by motorists due to road-widening works between Tiruvallur and Puttur along National Highway 716.
Diversions along this stretch have made travel slower and more tiring than usual. Heavy movement of tipper lorries and trucks, especially those carrying construction materials, adds to the congestion and increases travel time. Though the temporary diversion roads are reported to be in relatively good condition, frequent speed breakers and active construction zones require drivers to proceed with caution and patience.
Regular commuters note that while the inconvenience is evident, the work appears to be progressing steadily. Many remain hopeful that the widening project will ease traffic flow and significantly improve travel conditions within the next year.
One of the biggest bottlenecks continues to be the crossing through Tiruvallur town, where traffic congestion and multiple speed breakers slow vehicles considerably. However, travellers starting from areas closer to the Chennai Outer Ring Road suggest an alternative route: ORR – Tiruninravur Exit – Tiruninravur Town – NH716 – Tiruvallur Bypass. This stretch is said to be relatively smoother and quicker compared to passing directly through the town centre.
Motorists are advised against fixing strict arrival schedules when travelling on this route, as highway conditions and diversions can significantly impact journey duration. With limited eateries and rest stops along the bypass stretch, proper planning for food and fuel is essential.
Until the expansion works are completed, some travellers recommend opting for train services between Chennai and Tirupati to avoid unpredictable delays and travel fatigue.
