The nationwide rollout of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has rightly been described as a landmark moment in India’s public health journey. Former Indian Council of Medical Research Director General V.M. Katoch has called the move visionary and transformative — and the description fits. By bringing the HPV vaccine under the national immunisation programme, the government has taken a decisive step towards combating cervical cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among Indian women. For years, public health experts have maintained that cervical cancer is largely preventable, and vaccination remains one of the most powerful tools available.
HPV infection is the principal cause of cervical cancer, a disease that continues to affect women in their young and middle years, often with devastating consequences for families. The vaccine’s effectiveness is no longer in question; it has been widely used across the world and has significantly reduced cervical cancer incidence in countries with strong immunisation coverage. Yet in India, despite regulatory approval nearly two decades ago, access remained largely limited to those who could afford private healthcare. The inclusion of the vaccine in the national programme corrects that imbalance, ensuring that protection is not a privilege of income but a right extended to all eligible girls.
The larger significance of this decision lies in its long-term vision. Widespread immunisation before exposure to the virus will not only safeguard individuals but also curb community transmission. If implemented with sustained commitment, awareness campaigns and robust outreach, this initiative has the potential to dramatically reduce — and eventually eliminate — cervical cancer as a public health threat in India. In the fight against preventable diseases, this is not merely a policy update; it is a promise of a healthier future for millions of women.
