To improve passenger comfort, Southern Railway has announced plans to introduce air-conditioned waiting rooms at 30 railway stations across Tamil Nadu.
Railway officials said the initiative is part of a broader effort to upgrade passenger amenities at important stations in the state. The proposed AC waiting halls will feature comfortable seating, clean restrooms and other basic facilities aimed at providing a more pleasant travel experience, especially during long waiting periods and the summer season.
At present, AC waiting rooms are already available at several major stations including Chennai Central railway station, Chennai Egmore railway station, Tambaram railway station, Tiruppur railway station, Erode Junction railway station, Tiruchirappalli Junction railway station, Srirangam railway station, Karaikudi Junction railway station, Rameswaram railway station and Palani railway station.
Recently, a new AC waiting hall was inaugurated at Karur railway station with modern facilities including Wi-Fi connectivity, feeding rooms for mothers, restrooms and comfortable seating arrangements. The facility operates round the clock and passengers can use it by paying a nominal fee of about âč25 per hour.
Officials said similar facilities will soon be expanded to more railway stations across the state as part of efforts to enhance passenger convenience and improve overall station infrastructure in Tamil Nadu.
